Sometimes there seem to be no words to express the beauty that we see in nature, and, for me, that is when a paintbrush comes in handy. Being outside, soaking up the sun and fresh air, listening to the many voices of nature, can be a spiritual experience, and I hope to convey that sense of the sublime in my paintings. Nature has many moods, such as the power of an approaching storm, the peace of a summer afternoon, or the joy of brightly colored wildflowers. When there are no words, it is my wish to express in paint how I feel about nature’s many gifts to us all, if we but remember to look and see.

One of the things that I like to pay particular attention to in my paintings is how light affects the landscape, how it highlights some areas and softens others, how it makes the petals of a flower translucent or creates intricate shadow patterns when it shines through the leaves of a tree. The light constantly changes the landscape, which makes painting outdoors challenging. Nevertheless, I have come to love plein air painting, but I also enjoy the quiet of the studio. When outdoors, I prefer to paint with oils, and save the watercolors for the studio.
